It was a wild match with a crushing end to the playoffs for Cumberland Athletic Club. Hosting our first playoff game in our first season in Bigtime Soccer League, the Wild Marys almost made a furious comeback hold, only to end up in a frustrating overtime loss.
Capital District started off strongly with 5 early points from Kamara, Villa and Poku. That lead seemed insurmountable and became worse as the middle of the match saw 3 more points from Melano and Valeri with only a single point from Villafana in reply. With a 8 - 1 deficit, all hope seemed lost.
As the match wore on Capital District stalled in their run-up of points adding only, albeit crucial, point from Techera. The Campers began to pile on points with Bradley showing why he was a DP with 3 points and Tchani adding 1.
With the score 9 - 5, hope was not really there as the match wound towards its close. But, Robbie Keane showed why he has been the Man of the Year for Cumberland Athletic with 4 magnificent points to draw the game level and forcing overtime. Ellinger said it best, "It's hard to complain about a player who brings 4 points to the table, but he missed that sitter as time was running out and that would have given him a 5th and prevented overtime. It was right there for the taking and we missed out."
Overtime was decided by Godoy's goal and that was end of an exciting, though disappointing, evening.
Next up for the Wild Marys, in two weeks, the Major Cup Playoffs versus Montreal Impact of Major League Soccer.
