Overtime loss in playoffs

It was a wild match with a crushing end to the playoffs for Cumberland Athletic Club. Hosting our first playoff game in our first season in Bigtime Soccer League, the Wild Marys almost made a furious comeback hold, only to end up in a frustrating overtime loss.

Capital District started off strongly with 5 early points from Kamara, Villa and Poku. That lead seemed insurmountable and became worse as the middle of the match saw 3 more points from Melano and Valeri with only a single point from Villafana in reply. With a 8 - 1 deficit, all hope seemed lost.

As the match wore on Capital District stalled in their run-up of points adding only, albeit crucial, point from Techera. The Campers began to pile on points with Bradley showing why he was a DP with 3 points and Tchani adding 1.

With the score 9 - 5, hope was not really there as the match wound towards its close. But, Robbie Keane showed why he has been the Man of the Year for Cumberland Athletic with 4 magnificent points to draw the game level and forcing overtime. Ellinger said it best, "It's hard to complain about a player who brings 4 points to the table, but he missed that sitter as time was running out and that would have given him a 5th and prevented overtime. It was right there for the taking and we missed out."

Overtime was decided by Godoy's goal and that was end of an exciting, though disappointing, evening.

Next up for the Wild Marys, in two weeks, the Major Cup Playoffs versus Montreal Impact of Major League Soccer.

Playoffs vs Capital District

Proudly welcoming Capital District to Campground Stadium for Cumberland Athletic Club's first ever appearance in the Bigtime Soccer League Playoffs! With key players inactive, the Wild Marys hope to plug the holes in the lineup with solid defenders Kevin Ellis, Steve Birnbaum and Fabinho. Encouraging is the return of Bill Hamid to the net along with Robbie Keane leading the charge. Coach John Ellinger: "Preparing for the playoffs is very exciting for me, something I never was able to accomplish as head coach of Real Salt Lake. We may be missing some of our regular starters, but our new additions are capable of giving us key points."

Roster Move and Week 17 Lineup

Owing to Gold Cup call ups and injuries, Cumberland Athletic Club is proud to welcome Jeff Attinella (RSL) to the team. He will start in goal in this week's match. To make room for Attinella, Demar Phillips is released.

In celebration of the Independence Day Holiday and the rich history of the game of marbles in the Cumberland, Maryland area, there will be pre-game and half-time activities devoted to marbles.

A competition among the best players in the region will occur beginning 2 hours before game time.

At half-time, instead of the usual human soccer ball match, the game will be human marbles using the same inflated balls with people inside. Hilarity is sure to ensue.

Week 15: Back at it!

With the international break over, it is time for assessing where we stand. After starting the season on an unimaginable tear of excellent form (and benefitting from good luck, gotta have some luck), Cumberland Athletic dashed off 5 wins. That was extended to 7 wins and 1 loss. Since then, however, it has been uneven, charitably: 1 win, 4 losses and 1 tie. Tied for 2nd place (third place on PPG) with 2 other teams, CAC is needing to find new life. It is hoped the international break will heal some wounds and form will return. The playoffs loom and that is where the shiny stuff lives!

This week we are at home against Second City another tied-for-2nd place team. So, a 6-pointer! Roll Wild Marys! Roll!!! Campground stadium will be booming with noise welcoming home from international duty Robbie Keane, Michael Bradley and Jordan Allen.

You can be assured that they understand that they know that coasting to the playoffs is not the way a champion plays, or words to that effect. Back to Winning! and Week 13

The Wild Marys played gritty soccer this past weekend winning both the league match against Burud Town and the Majors Cup Qualifier at Gold Coast. Campground stadium was abuzz with rumors that Burud town's bus had gotten waylaid on the way to the match. They literally stepped off the bus minutes before kickoff with some players ruled ineligible due to mishandling of the lineup card by the manager. Still, a riveting contest ensued as the Campers were able to find alternative sources of goals with key contributors Robbie Keane and Omar Gonzalez benched. With Charlie Davies, Chris Tierney, and DP Michael Bradley all contributing points late in the contest, a 3:0 victory was assured. In the Majors Cup Qualifier The Wild Marys traveled to Gold Coast and posted a 5:3 victory. Max Urruti provided added 1 and Michael Bradley tallied 2. Ellinger said, "I'm so very proud of these boys for stepping up the way they did. Tremendous grit, maybe too much  from Tierney and Nguyen [chuckling], carried us through. This is a match that builds tremendous confidence for the remainder of the season and to take into the playoffs."

Red cards for both Lee Nguyen and Chris Tierney make them ineligible for week 13. Fortunately, both Keane and Gonzalez are fit and can take their place.

Winless Streak! Week 12 Lineup

With a winless streak running, Cumberland Athletic is grasping to recover early season form. Injuries have definitely become a problem with two top starters out. Robbie Keane has been out for several weeks, his offensive contributions going sorely missing. Then, this past week, Omar Gonzalez fell to a knee injury. No word on when either player will return. Newly acquired Jordan Allen has flown to New Zealand for the U-20 World Cup, depleting our starting lineup even more. Andy Williams said of Allen, "Of course we knew he was being called up when we acquired him, but we wanted to lock him into contract. We expect him to return with playing experience that even a full season with the club could not give him. It is an exciting honor for him and we are proud that he is part of CAC."

Still, quality still rides with the Wild Marys with Andy Rose and Michel returning to the starting lineup. Double games for our core of players should result in good points.

Wild Marys Suffer Setback

Unable to muster much offense and the defense not showing up were the ingredients of a 5-1 drubbing on the road at Orange County. Coach Ellinger indicated that fatigue from travel was a factor, "We are still learning how to manage longer road trips than our organization has previously encountered. We were fortunate that previous travel issues did not impact on-the-field performance." Next up for CAC is at Union Southern California. The team has made arrangements to stay and train in California which is hoped to ease some of the travel issues.

Signing Jordan Allen

Cumberland Athletic Club is pleased to announce the signing of Jordan Allen (Real Salt Lake). "This kid has all the tools, knows how to show up in dangerous places, and makes intelligent plays," said Director of Soccer Operations, Andy Williams. CAC is letting Donovan Ricketts go to make room on the roster and wish him well.

Done by Dempsey!

"Whenever you face Dempsey, well, he's a game changer," so said Andy Williams in the face of the draw earned at Spartans. Williams went on to add, "We are hopeful that Robbie Keane returns from his lingering injury soon. We need him back." With the lead well in hand, Dempsey scored two the bring the game even. "We had no answers for him, and another wouldn't have surprised me," said coach Ellinger.

For week 10, Cumberland will make one change in starters for the road game in California against Orange County, Luis Gil will start in place of Andy Rose and a minor change in substitution order in hopes that Keane will get some useful minutes that we can cash in.

Double Your Pleasure! And, Week 9

The Wild Marys showed no mercy in drubbing Rose City on the road by a 10-3 score in the Major Cup Qualifier. At first the match appeared to be close with Rose City getting 3 early points from Amerikwa and Barnes. But, Cumberland Athletic Club quickly took control with contributions from 6 of the 11 starters. Yellow cards by Rose City allowed Gil off the bench to provide 2 more points. In Bigtime Soccer League action, playing at home, CAC was similarly no-nonsense in routing Gateway United 4-0. "Shutouts are rare and precious in this league making us particularly proud of this outcome," said Coach Ellinger. He continued, "We are satisfied with our defensive orientation and have increased confidence that it will help us continue to lead the league."

For Week 9, CAC will go with the same lineup as Week 8, taking its 7-1-0 record on the road to Spartans 1612 (have they been playing soccer that long, wowzers!).

First defeat

Cumberland Athletic Club suffered their first defeat of the season, in its history in the BigTime Soccer League, this past weekend as Gold Coast came to town. The 4-2 outcome came down to unexpected injuries and lower than anticipated production by goalkeeper Hamid. Falling behind 2-0 early, the Wild Marys were able to scratch back 1 before going down 2 more. There was no coming back after that. "We will pick ourselves up, examine what went right and wrong, and look forward to getting the win against Rose City," said coach Ellinger.

The loss moved CAC to 2nd place in the BSL with 15 points behind Union Southern Californiat at 16 points.

Holding on for the win!

It was nip and tuck for Cumberland Athletic Club visiting the Capital District Gunners with a 2:1 win as the final result. CAC took the lead early with a PK goal by Lee Nguyen. That lead looked unlikely to hold up as Stephan Frei earned a shutout point for the Gunners. With a lot of players yet to contribute, the Gunners looked likely to find more and take all 3 points. CAC earned another point with an assist from Michel. In the end, the Wild Marys were fortunate to hold on for the win with the Gunners unable to find more points out of their many opportunities. Coach Ellinger took the blame for the closeness of the match, saying,  "Lineup rotation placed Hamid on the bench and that may not have been my coaching decision. Win or lose, we evaluate all the decisions made in a week's preparation. It appears our analysis of our players and situations was not up to snuff. We will sort it out for next week for our home match with Gold Coast F.C."

Lineup for Week 5 hosting Capital District

Cumberland Athletic Club puts our undefeated and untied record on the line as the Capital District Gunners come to Campground Stadium this weekend. As another of the old guard of the Bigtime Soccer League, the Gunners will bring more than enough game. Technical Director Andy Williams has viewed tape and said, "They will cause the Wild Marys all kinds of problems in the midfield and they have strong forwards with my old friend Alvaro Saborio and Chris Pontius." The midfield Andy was referring to has the legendary David Villa backed up with Stephan Ishizaki. Cumberland will go with the following lineup. The train whistle will blow at 7:00 p.m. sharp with fine weather expected.

Two Wins in Spectacular Road Trip for CAC

On the basis of high scoring, CAC took both contests on this past weekend's road trip. In the league, the Wild Marys thumped Second City SC 7-0. Leading the scoring was Tierney's SOG and Assist for 2 points, with Nguyen's assist. That was followed by Pedro Ribeiro's assist and goal for 2 more points. Ending Saturday's run was Hamid's brilliant goalkeeping performance posting a shutout with 5 saves for another 2 points. A disheartened Second City was not able to get off the mat with their Sunday lineups to offer resistance. It was a tight affair for the Majors Cup Qualifier against Alamo City, a rematch of our league opener, but this time played in Texas. The 5-3outcome could have gone either way with the Texans having a hoard of players on Sunday after CAC had built a 5-2 lead. In the end, only 2 more points were mustered by AC and the Wild Marys boarded the train home with the win in their pocket. The Wild Marys  points came by way of Ribeiro's Goal, Tierney's SOG, Hamid's Shut-out and 5 saves, with Charlie Davies contributing an SOG, also. They were singing to the timing of the rails on the overnight trip back to Maryland!

Week 4 we travel to Chicago. Finally, the Wild Marys will be able to travel in the style to which they are accustomed, via train. Starting Lineup for Week 3

Traveling to Massachusetts (as we've learned) to Burud Town to take on another of the 'old guard' of the league. Probably feeling a little too proud after posting two wins in the opening two rounds of the season, Coach Ellinger is tempering expectations, "With several players out for CCL duty, we will be running a lot of young'uns, this week. Fortunately, they've gotten some playing time and even some points in their reserve team work, so we are confident that they can support our efforts this week." Director of Soccer Operations, Andy Williams, said, "I hear it's possible a late snow storm could come through. I'm advising long sleeves for all the players." When asked if he ever advises short sleeves Mr. Williams just walked away chuckling, apparently at the silliness of the question.

Transfer News!

In: Ryan Hollinghead (DAL)
Out: Mark Sherrod (SJE)

It is hoped that Mark Sherrod will benefit from continued rehab without the pressure to get onto the field. He will be loaned to a lower division side when his health improves to rebuild his game. Ryan Hollingshead is a bright young talent that the team has been watching for a long time and we are pleased to finally get his agent to answer our calls.

First road victory, somewhere in Canada!

The team is still unsure where it went, exactly, to play SC Canada. They do remember a cheerful Mountie checking their passports at someplace called North Portal. The stadium was eventually found and Cumberland Athletic Club won it's first away match, also the second match of the inaugural season, and sits in sole possession of first place in the league with 6 points. In the Newcomers of Aught-15 Cup race, CAC takes an early 3 points lead.

The scoring started early with a quiet shutout by new signee, Donovan Ricketts. Man of the match honors goes to Michel who notched 2 assists for 2 more points for the Wild Marys. Not to be outdone, Gonzalez continued his scoring with a shot on goal to put the match out of reach with the 4th point. The Beavers did score 2 points through Bendick's shutout and Ridgewell's assist.

Next up, CAC travels to Burud Town... yeah, we have been searching on Google Maps, too. We can't even find a bus driver who knows where they are. But, other teams in the league have played them so, can we get a little help here?

Wild Marys Win Inaugural Match!

Cumberland Athletic club won their inaugural match against the Alamo City Battle 3:2. "We take it as a point of pride to put a marker down for all the league to see that we are not to be taken lightly, particularly at Campground Field," said manager John Ellinger after the match. The match started strong with an early 2:0 lead due to contributions from Omar Gonzalez and Captain Robbie Keane. But, at halftime the owner of ACB was heard to say, "...2:0 leads are the most dangerous..." He was not out of line, because the put their Battle on and tied the score 2:2 before Bill Hamid brought home the win for the Wild Marys.

Man of the Match is Robbie Keane for scoring the first points in the history of the team. (Which comes first the goal or the assist that leads to the goal?)

Coming up next for CAC is the first road trip in the BSL, traveling to fellow expansion side SC Canada. Director of Soccer Operations, Andy Williams, said, "It is unclear where we are going in Canada, though judging from the Beaver on the badge, we believe it is in Saskatchewan. Our bus driver says he knows where to go." With Hamid out for a scheduled international tournament break, it is likely new acquisition Donovan Ricketts will set up between the pipes. The rest of the starting lineup is still under consideration.

Ricketts in Barrett Out.

Cumberland Athletic Club is pleased to welcome Donovan Ricketts to Braddock Road Training Ground. After completing the customary physical, he was seen trotting onto the field to begin warmups for his first training with the club. Dropped from the roster was Chad Barrett. Barrett was seen boarding a plane for Jamaica, unknown if it was for vacation or for opportunities in the Jamaican league. This transition also maintains the number of double-t names on the roster, a good luck talisman for the owner.

In: Donovan Ricketts

First points earned by Gonzalez and Keane

Only 9 minutes into the new season and Gonzalez and Keane combined for the first points for the expansion Wild Marys, setting a 2:0 lead over the Alamo City Battle! Keane slotted home the knocked down assist from Gonzalez confidently playing out of the back. Keane picked the ball out of the air without even a touch to control in a masterful display of skill.

Inaugural Draft for CAC

Cumberland Athletic Club had an excellent inaugural draft. Bringing in proven veterans and youngsters with excellent potential. CAC took an unusual path by drafting Bill Hamid, veteran goalkeeper in the first round. That was followed by defensive midfielder, Michel. The number of defenders and defensive midfielders taken was unusual for the league's offensive orientation. The philosophy, according to the owner and General Manager Edward Braddock (aka, "The General"), was "get the best athlete possible, the best scoring potential, positions are not the primary concern." Particularly fitting this philosophy is Jamaican defender, Demar Phillips. He possesses flying speed going forward and recovering with ease and a motor that will take him through the full 90. Combine that with devastating crossing abilities and he could be a league leader among defenders in assists. Omar Gonzalez should provide many 'snap headers' on goal (thanks, Dunny!). Lining up alongside forwards Robbie Keane and Charlie Davies will be veterans Max Urruti and Chad Barrett. Young forwards with tremendous potential to nurture are Pedro Ribeiro and Mark Sherrod. Filling out the midfield foundation of Michael Bradley and Lee Nguyen will be veteran (a strange word to use with such a young player) Luis Gil, Chris Tierney, and Michel. Youngster Andy Rose will be nurtured in this position. Coach Ellinger was quoted, "This is a team that can go places! Let's get to work!" Andy Williams also expressed pleasure in the selections, "Teams with versatility in the midfield are difficult to keep out of the net. I'm excited to begin building this into a team."

Ladies and Gentlemen, we proudly present your 2015 Cumberland Athletic Club Wild Marys!

First Round Draft Selection: Bill Hamid

US International and all around stunning shot-stopper, Bill Hamid is the first draft pick in the history of Cumberland Athletic Club. With eye-popping saves (110) and shutouts (10) in 2014, Hamid's control of the goal is just what the Wild Marys need to be contenders in their first season in the BSL. Coach Ellinger was quoted as saying, "You have to build a soccer team from the back to the front, and Hamid is just the foundation on which we need to build." Andy Williams said, "He's no Jamaican, but he's still an amazing keeper!" At 6'3" and 225#, Hamid imposes his will on the 6 yard box with his strength, height and weight. Hamid tweeted on hearing the news, "Short drive from C-town to back home = happiness!"

Expansion Draft Enhancement

In the 2015 BSL Expansion Draft, CAC was pleased to pick up two extraordinarily skilled and productive players: Irish international forward, Robbie Keane and US Men's National Team midfielder, Lee Nguyen. Coming off excellent 2014 campaigns both Keane and Nguyen are clearly top drawer players. Nguyen is in the prime of his career at age 28 while Keane still shows the enthusiasm and quick creative thinking of his youth, even if a step has been lost, at age 34. Keane was seen to tweet on hearing the news: "Cumberland has a new brew pub coming, so I'm there!" Nguyen was contacted by phone and said that he's "very happy to continue to work with his teammate, Charlie Davies" and looks "forward to developing on the field chemistry with Keane and Bradley."

The BSL 2015 Expansion Draft was held today via electronic communication on February 18, 2015.

CAC will be sponsoring a watch party for the BSL draft on February 20 at the Draft Sports Bar and Grille in Frostburg starting at 7:00 a.m.! Wild Marys (their own unique version of a Bloody Mary) will be served, naturally.
Robbie Keane is expected to bring determination and creativity to the Wild Mary's attack.
Lee Nguyen's productivity is expected to be even better in 2015 with strong midfield support and poaching strikers sitting in front.

Charlie Davies hopes to celebrate many goals for the Wild Marys!
Cumberland Athletic Club has acquired Charlie Davies from Gold Coast FC in exchange for CAC's 6th round 2015 draft pick.

Soccer Operations Director Andy Williams (formerly of Real Salt Lake) was quoted, "Charlie Davies is a proven striker who showed near the end of the 2014 season that he has returned to form. With a supporting midfield to feed him the ball in dangerous spots, we have high hopes for him."

Charlie Davies is the second player acquired by the Wild Marys and concludes pre-draft expansion side trading.

CAC's first signing is Michael Bradley!

Cumberland Athletic Club is pleased to announce the first signing in its renewed history,  Michael Bradley, U.S. National Team stalwart.  Using the special rules allowing expansion teams to trade for up to 2 players prior to the expansion draft, CAC came to agreement with Gateway United. In exchange, Gateway United obtains CAC's 2015 3rd round draft pick.

CAC is also proud to announce the hiring of the first coach for the team: John Ellinger. Ellinger had retired from his assistant coaching position at F.C. Dallas 2 years ago, but came out of retirement because of the opportunity for him to coach the first PSL team in his native Maryland. "How could I pass up the opportunity to coach in the area where I played my college soccer? I'm thrilled to be here and to be reconnecting to my scouting and coaching contacts."

Bradley brings a resume of play on illustrious European clubs Roma and Borussia Mönchengladbach. Since 2006, he has 91 appearances for the senior U.S. National Team and 12 goals. Bradley says of his arrival, "To work with Coach Ellinger again so many years after our time at the Bradenton Academy is a dream come true." About playing for an expansion club, "Of course, this will be a very tough league to enter anew, but I have confidence in the ownership and coaching philosophy. I'm here to work and to lead the youngsters we will certainly have."
